Locksmith Training Courses & Starting Up As A New Locksmith Business

Forget the conviction thing i would be more concerned about why you want to do it. I really hope you have done your

home work or you could be just another failed startup in the locksmith industry.

Its extremely tough out there at present for a lot of startups with many with not much work.

I've lost count of how many emails I've had from new locksmiths who are looking for work or experience.

Of course the training schools will tell you you can earn £1000 per week after your 2 day course but its not the reality.

Have you done a business plan ? Do you have lots of finance ? You need a lot of captial to get anywhere or you will end
up failing like lots of locksmiths do every week.

More importantly how are you going to get your work?

Dont think an ad in the yellow pages or on 118 1118 or 118 24-7 will get you much. Neither will dropping cards into

letting agents etc, its all been done before.

The problem is that about 5 years ago only a handful did training. Many promised the 1k a week and people did
the courses. After trading a bit and getting no work and struggling many started to set up their own training
school of locksmiths as a way of earning money.

Now there are over 70 "training schools" all turning out more and more wannabes EACH WEEK in an already staturated
  market.

This means even more poorly trained guys running amok pretending to be locksmiths.

Unless you have specialist skills within the trade it is hard going for many.
What to you want to learn?...
safes, access control, upvc, picking/nde, bench skills, armour plate glass doors and their closers, auto work,
physical security like shutters, gates, grilles or just plain old domestic? Btw which every course teaches
thus the heavy competition in the domestic market.

Its hard to just get work from other locksmiths unless they know you and what your skills are like.
At DK Locksmiths & Sons we never use sub contractors and so would ask new comers in the trade not to contact us
as we are a family business with a total of over 60 years as Locksmiths and so not use sub contractors at any time.

The only ones who will give you work from the off are the likes of the nationals, basically call centres.
They will expect you charge high prices and only get 40% of the total. But you wont get much as they already
have lots of locksmiths on their books just like yourself. The customer however remembers your face after being
ripped off and wont call you again.

Apart from that your conviction shouldn't be a problem unless it was for burglary or similar. However being a police
vetted locksmith, like those at DK Locksmiths & Sons, does prove very reassuring to clients.

What locksmith course are you considering?

Its a harsh reality and not one many want to hear but its the truth. If you are determined to succeed then it wont
put you off but its not easy money as everyone seems to think. You need to be able to set aside your social life as 24hr
call outs are inevitable, expect cancellations when you are already half way to the customer and very high advertising
  costs.
